The very beginning of August the kids were playing in the backyard, when Kate fell off the bottom of the steps that lead from the deck to the grass. She fell right on her arm and I had a gut feeling that it was bad. I looked at her arms and her left arm looked a little bowed. She was crying so much and grabbing her forearm where it hurt. It was a Wednesday night and we knew we needed to take her in for an xray. Good thing our new health insurance kicked in August 1st. :) After the xray, it was determined that it was some sort of a break, but the radiologist would have to read it before her arm was casted. So, we were sent home with a splint to wear.
Friday morning I got a call saying that yes it was a green stick fracture and it will need to be casted, but it could wait till Monday to make sure the swelling had gone down. Monday morning we went to the clinic to have a pediatrician cast it. He kept looking at it and hesitating as her arm was still visibly bowed. It was making me nervous. He then decided that he is not going to cast it and we need to go to the orthopedic doctor. Sigh. So, we walked over to the orthopedic doctor where they did more xrays, etc. Apparently this kind of fracture is very rare and he told me it was a plastic fracture, not a green stick fracture. Then I am told that to fix her arm, she is going to have to be put under general anesthesia so they can set it and cast it. Another sigh and lots of tears from my little Kate. Poor thing had really been given a lot to deal with. So, we scheduled it, and it was done 2 days later. I just wish they had sent me to the orthopedic doctor the first night. By the time her arm was finally casted, it had been a full week since the incident with a lot of unnecessary appointments.
